A Rainy day in Beautiful Bruges..

Bruges, Belgium

This is my first time to Belgium. Yeah! It has been pretty long since I visit a new destination. I had a flight to Amsterdam last week and I took this opportunity to travel to Belgium. I booked this one day tour to Bruges (Dutch: Brugge)ย by Keytours from the hotel which costs me 65euros (SGD106). The tour is only available on every Wednesday and Sunday.

Prior to the trip, I have never heard about Bruges and I have no idea that this beautiful city actually exists. Bruges is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities and the historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. Bruges is also known as “Venice of the North” with its picturesque canals.

Entering the city gates, we first come to the Lake of Love with a whiteness of swans swimming about. The lake has a beautiful name but there is a tragic legend behind it.

The city of Bruges has a poor reputation for its weather and compared to other western European cities like London and Paris, the weather in Bruges is colder and more damp. Though it was already late May, the weather was cold, windy and rainy. The average temperate was about 10-12 degree Celsius. I was only wearing a thin jacket and I did not have an umbrella. SO COLD. There were a few elderly people in the tour group. They were walking with canes and despite the bad rainy weather, they continued with the tour and tried to catch up with the pace. Salute and respect!

The old style horse drawn carriages still run on the town’s streets. It is a great way to explore and learn about Bruges history though the old fashion way.

Another great way to explore Bruges is a boat trip on the Reie. The 30 minutes canal cruise only costs me 6.40euro and you can view the most important landmarks of Bruges. The boat driver also shares about the history of Bruges and tells funny anecdotes as we pass by some interesting architectures.

One of the things you DIE-DIE-MUST-BUY in Belgium is CHOCOLATE! Chocolate lovers will never want to leave Belgium because they make amazing chocolate. Of cos I bought a lot of chocolate back la! How to resist! I tried this hot chocolate with rum in one of the random cafes and it is so damn good. First, you need to stir the chocolate cube into the warm milk. After the chocolate is melted into the milk, you need to squeeze out the rum and then mix it. Chocolate and rum, a heavenly combination. Me love!

One of the famous landmarks in Bruges is its 13-century Belfry. It is 83 meters high and a climb of 366 steps will take you to the top to enjoy a breathtaking view of the city and its surrounding countryside. I missed the last entry to the staircase to go to the top by 5 minutes cos I was grabbing a bite at the food stall outside the tower. I guess I was just not fated to enjoy the beautiful view.

Another landmark in Bruges is Church of Our Lady. The Church of Our Lady houses the Madonna and Child. The Madonna and Child is one of few of Michelangelo’s works to leave Italy during his lifetime.

Belgium – Another beautiful country conquered! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Its me again!

life looks good on your side! oooo. i love chocolates. wouldnt deem myself as a chocolate connoisseur but i do enjoy eating it! just looking at the chocolate with milk and rum makes me drool already. and your volunteering trip is really amazing. your partner and yourself looks really compatible ๐Ÿ™‚ its really not easy maintaining a long distance relationship and i salute you guys for being able to do so. technically its not really long distance but becoz you fly so often, its really like a long distance relationship. haha.

i can imagine when you say your life in singapore isnt worth blogging, becoz you travel around and experience so much more, sigh. imagine my life, its even more boring since i dont travel.

    anyways, take care alright! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Alison, thanks for visiting again! ๐Ÿ™‚ Indeed it is really not easy to maintain such a “long distance” relationship. We dun really get to spend a lot of time together. No Skype.. No calls.. No dating.. we are the “boring” type of couple. Lol! My life in Singapore is really boring and I am sure you have more fun in Singapore than me. ๐Ÿ™‚

kudos to how you guys maintain the relationship! no skype or calls?! my goodness, thats really not easy!! im sure wedding plans are underway! ๐Ÿ˜€ out of curiosity, would you get married in Singapore? since you travel so much, im sure theres a place in mind you would wan as your wedding location! :p

o yes, do you actually get souvenirs from every country that you travel to? that would be really coool!

so where is your next destination this time? do your frens actually get you to buy stuff from them? hehehe.

my life in singapore is pretty boring. shuttling between school and home and that is basically it ๐Ÿ™ cant wait to be done and out working!

    take care ๐Ÿ™‚

We do not have any wedding plans and I am still quite young to settle down. I m only turning 23 this year. :p You are right! I wouldn’t want to get married in Singapore cos it is a hassle to have wedding banquet. I think it is more like for “show”. I will want to do it in style like getting married in Las Vegas. Just the two of us.. How about you and your boy? ๐Ÿ™‚

The only souvenir I get is fridge magnet and I try to buy at least one from each destination. ๐Ÿ™‚ My next destination is Beijing, pretty look forward to the food and cheap massage. Ya sometimes I will get requests from my friends to help them buy some stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy school while you can cos I really miss school life at times. It is nice to hang out with peeps around your age group and have some fun. Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

thats true. haha. anyways, theres still plenty to achieve before settling down.

vegas? thats interesting. hmmm. what happens in vegas stays in vegas! hahah.

sigh. my boy? nah. im currently single. had a bad experience. shelving the idea of dating in the mean time.
rather put all my effort and time on my studies. cant wait to be done before i get the heck outta school. doubt i’d ever miss it and im pretty sure i wont! :p

fridge magnets are a great idea. doesnt take up that much a space plus it keeps a lil of the memory you had at that destination. wah. your friends are a lucky bunch! :p

btw, do you have twitter? i just created a twitter account and im trying to learn how to use it :/ it is actually my first and only form of social media. im really a noob lah. still learning. took me some time to know how to follow people -.-

you take care flying too! hope im not being an annoying follower because i ask so much. >.<

time is right, opportunity is there… nothing else matters, just go where-ever you may be. its not easy to create such tedious time stamped ocassions that cross your life. well done n i enjoyed it. thanks.
