Bali, Indonesia [20 to 23 June 2016]

Day 1 – 20 June 2016 (Monday)

I finally have some time to blog about my 26th birthday retreat to Bali, Indonesia. When I was a flight attendant, I have done a few DPS turnarounds but never once has the opportunity to explore this beautiful island. I changed SGD 336 to IDR 3,000,000 at Changi Airport Terminal 2. The check-in process was smooth and I didn’t have to print out any documents which I just show the flight confirmation to the counter staff from my iPhone 6.

This is the first time that I am using my new backpack (Vaude 45 + 10 litre) that I bought from The Travel Store @ Funan Digital Lifemall. The backpack costs me about SGD250.

View from Seat 14A

My personal preference is to choose window seat and mid section of the plane.

Reasons:

  • The front section  (FWD) of the plane has bassinet points and are usually allocated for parents travelling with children/infants. Most children tend to cry during take-off and landing or even during mid-flight. However, the pros of sitting in the FWD section of the plane is you can disembark and clear custom faster.
  • The back (AFT) section of the plane is near to the lavatory and AFT galley. It can be smelly and noisy.

The flight TR 2282 touch down @ Ngurah Rai International Airport (a.k.a Denpasar International Airport) at 9.55am on schedule. The first thing I did was to buy the local sim card (Telkomsel Simpati) at the counter after exiting from the arrival hall.

I then took a 40 minutes taxi ride to the hotel, Uppala Village & Spa Umalas (Address: Jl. Bumbak Dauh, Kerobokan, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali) at a flat of IDR20,000. Traffic jams and congestion are common in Bali.

Nasi Goreng & Avocado Juice with chocolate

Arrived at the hotel earlier than the check-in time at 2pm, I left my heavy baggage with the concierge and went to have my lunch at the UGGA cafe. The plating for Nasi Goreng was good, it made the dish more appetising and appealing to the palate.

The 1-bedroom Villa was clean, huge and spacious.

The initial plan was to rent an open top 4×4 jeep but I rented a motorbike instead which was easier to get around.

I tried this peanut chocolate milk pancake at a local night market. Sinfully good~

Local delicacy – Vermicelli with meatball and hard-boiled egg which doesn’t taste nice. The “frestea” tastes like iced green tea.

Randomly came across this food stall that sells the famous must-try local food “Babi Guling” while riding on my way back to the hotel.

The packet of Babi Guling only costs IDR10,000 (~SGD1), which I tabao back to enjoy in the comfort of my hotel. JIN HO JIAK!~ SEDAP!~

Day 2 – 21 June 2016 (Tuesday)

Even when I was flying around, I always make it a point to take leave on my birthday. Never like the idea of staying in Singapore for my birthday’s celebration except last year I celebrated in Singapore with my family.

My breakkie – Egg white omelette (Portion so small). Nevertheless, it is yummy and I love to eat eggs.

This is my first time trying stand-up paddle boarding. I looked wary as I was told by many about the tidal waves.

SUCCESS! 🙂

I rode my motorbike to Jimbaran Beach to settle for my dinner. I chose a table nearest the beach, started off my first course with fresh oyster and a glass of house pour white white. Followed by grilled red snapper with rice and condiments and stir-fried kangkong with garlic. Wonderful dinner!

A happy me and satisfied tummy.

I would highly recommend to come to Jimbaran beach to enjoy fresh seafood under the moonlight while watching the sun set. What a great experience…

When I went back to the hotel, I told the hotel staff that it was my birthday and if they are able to give me a complimentary birthday. Buay hiao bai~

Caught by surprise when they presented the birthday cake to me before the clock strike midnight as my request was pretty last minute.

My 26th birthday cake with 3 big candles.

I was also delighted when the hotel staff gave me a free 1-hour spa to use it the next day.

Day 3 – 22 June 2016 (Wednesday)

After the rejuvenating 1 hour complimentary spa, I rode a 2 hour ride to this famous restaurant Ibu Oka that serves the local MUST-TRY delicacy, “Babi Guling”.

Babi Guling, or suckling pig, is one of the most famous food in Bali. Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka is a landmark in Bali, and it is known to serve one of the best, if not the best Babi Guling. Rice topped with suckling pig skin, grilled sausage, grilled pork, and deep-fried pork, Babi Guling (Rp 40,000) is good for the soul but bad for the arteries. It is one of the things that you must eat in Bali.

I ordered the set lunch “Babi Guling”, rice topped with suckling pig skin, grilled sausage, grilled pork and mixed vegetables.

Taking a mandatory selfie shot before I tuck into my meal

After the delightful lunch, I drove back to the hotel to return the rented motorbike. Took a nap and before I know it, dusk falls and I went to the hotel’s restaurant to have my dinner.

I thought of frequenting the club in Bali and immerse in the night scene, but then I felt that it was too far and the taxi fares will be too expensive so I gave up the thoughts and went to bed instead. Wah like good girl man! And I want to be back to Singapore in one piece… My life is precious! There is always next time too~
